El viernes 5 de junio acogimos en BBK Kuna un coloquio de reflexión sobre el futuro de las democracias en un contexto de profundas transformaciones sociales, tecnológicas y medioambientales. El encuentro, organizado en torno a la presentación del informe de “Naciones Unidas Democracias bajo presión. Reimaginar el futuro de la democracia en América Latina y el Caribe”, reunió a Magdy Martínez Solimán, Cristina Monge y Daniel Innerarity para analizar cómo fortalecer la democracia en un mundo cada vez más complejo e incierto.
La conversación giró en torno a una cuestión clave, la creciente pérdida de confianza de la ciudadanía en la capacidad de las democracias para ofrecer respuestas a los grandes desafíos del futuro. Más allá del funcionamiento cotidiano de las instituciones, el debate se centró en cómo fenómenos como el cambio climático, la inteligencia artificial, las migraciones, las transformaciones económicas o las tensiones geopolíticas están redefiniendo las expectativas ciudadanas respecto a la acción pública.
La incertidumbre y la confianza democrática
Uno de los principales mensajes compartidos durante el coloquio fue que la preocupación ciudadana no se dirige tanto al presente como al futuro. Las democracias continúan garantizando elecciones, instituciones estables y servicios públicos que funcionan razonablemente bien. Sin embargo, la magnitud de los cambios que se avecinan genera incertidumbre sobre su capacidad para anticiparse y gestionar con éxito los retos de las próximas décadas.
Los participantes reflexionaron sobre cómo esta incertidumbre puede favorecer la búsqueda de certezas en referentes conocidos, alimentando discursos que apelan al pasado frente a un futuro cada vez más difícil de interpretar. Desde esta perspectiva, algunos de los repliegues identitarios o ideológicos que observamos hoy pueden entenderse como respuestas a una creciente sensación de inseguridad ante escenarios complejos y cambiantes.
Democracias más eficaces para un mundo más complejo
Otro de los ejes del encuentro fue la necesidad de reforzar la capacidad de respuesta de las instituciones democráticas. Los ponentes coincidieron en que resulta imprescindible avanzar hacia modelos de gobernanza capaces de combinar transparencia, control democrático y agilidad en la toma de decisiones.
Asimismo, se destacó la importancia de recuperar espacios de deliberación pública más constructivos y orientados a la resolución de problemas. Frente a la polarización y la confrontación permanente que a menudo caracterizan el debate político, se reivindicó la necesidad de generar consensos amplios que permitan abordar desafíos de largo recorrido con una visión compartida de futuro.
Reimaginar la promesa democrática
Lejos de planteamientos pesimistas, el coloquio puso de relieve que las democracias siguen contando con instituciones sólidas y con capacidad de adaptación. El gran desafío consiste ahora en recuperar la confianza colectiva y reconstruir una promesa de futuro capaz de vincular libertad, bienestar y progreso en un contexto marcado por la incertidumbre.
La jornada celebrada en BBK Kuna ofreció un espacio de diálogo y reflexión sobre cómo fortalecer la democracia ante los retos del siglo XXI, contribuyendo a impulsar una conversación necesaria para construir sociedades más preparadas para afrontar los cambios que ya están transformando nuestro mundo.
